Exhibition text
The digital exhibition contemporary impasto unites outstanding international positions of contemporary art, which explore the impasto each in their distinctive way.
With this amalgamation, the exhibition wants to approach the very essence of impasto painting in the 21st century. Pastose painting in its current manifestations reveals itself as a genre of art that could not be more contemporary and relevant in today's artistic landscape. In its reduced, open aesthetic, which foregrounds its own material nature, it is a welcome antithesis to the permanent multimedia visual overstimulation that surrounds us, and enables a transformation of our viewing mode from the fleeting glance to the contemplative gaze in the sense of Norman Bryson. The canvas becomes a place of observation, reflection and contemplation.
In bringing together the selected artistic positions, the subtle differences between them become impressively visible. At the same time, this very contrasting configuration allows the respective individual essence of each style and technique to be amplified in its effect and to emerge even more clearly. The aim of the exhibition is thus twofold: to unite the most outstanding contemporary positions of pastose painting while exploring the scope and diversity within this artistic current.
From the abstract to the semi-figurative, from minimalist to the overloaded use of color, a smooth and fluid to a grainy ticked off brushstroke – the pastose in the 21st century can take many forms and contemporary impasto sees itself as a celebration of all of them.
